Kansas City’s Premier Anime Convention

Staff

Being a fan-run convention, Naka-Kon relies solely on the fans to keep the convention afloat. We have a wide variety of positions to meet the needs of dedicated individuals who want to give back to the anime community. Additionally, our high-tech meeting system will allow people to call and text into staff meetings, making it possible for fans outside the greater Kansas City area to attend meetings. While all staff are unpaid, everyone will receive compensation for their involvement, ranging from a free badge, hotel room, access to the post-con party, and others.

Convention Committee Members (Con Coms)

Con Coms are essentially people who organize others. They are assigned multiple sectional Directors whom they work with in meeting their goals. Con Com meet frequently to report on their work and interact with other sectors in order to weave them together into one harmonious convention. These people have the most responsibility and largest time commitment.

Section Directors

Directors are those who oversee all aspects of one particular sector of the convention. A Director has the responsibility of seeing all of their sector’s tasks to fruition and delegating tasks to their staff. Directors meet monthly and their time commitment is substantial.

Staff Members

Staff Members are people who work in a sector under their Director, both in preparation for the convention and during it. While Staff are assigned to one particular sector, they are given the opportunity to work with and give their input on multiple other sectors. They work a minimum 40 hours (combined from work pre-con and at-con), making their responsibilities considerably less than a Director’s.

Convention Assistants

Also known as super volunteers, Convention Assistants, or CAs, are people who work solely during the convention. Their attendance at meetings is encouraged, but not mandatory and must work a minimum of 20 hours at the convention. Thus, they have ample time to enjoy the convention and make a valued contribution of their service.

Convention Helpers

Convention Helpers, or CHs, have the same responsibilities as Convention Assitants but help with convention setup and teardown outside of con hours. Convention Helper is a great position for people who want to get the most out of their con experience but also want to do more than simply volunteer.

Volunteers

While it is encouraged to sign up to be a volunteer pre-con, this is the only position that you can sign up for at the convention. Time commitments from Volunteers range from two to sixteen hours, depending on how much the person is willing to offer. The primary areas where a volunteer will be stationed are badge checking, gofers (errand running), and other miscellaneous jobs.

How to Apply

As of the 2010 convention year, Naka-Kon has a state-of-the-art staff application site. Here you can fill out an application for all positions except for Volunteers. You will list the preferred sectors you would like to work in and will receive an e-mail letting you know of your accepted position within a month of filling out the application.

Since Naka-Kon is a fan-run convention, we rely on everyone to fill all these positions in order to run a successful convention. We would appreciate it if you took the time to consider volunteering for one of the positions above. If you have any questions about becoming staff, please email ops@naka-kon.com and our Operations Con Com will help you.
