Learn to sew a stylish, reusable Japanese bento box-style bag using a sewing machine in this hands-on class. Perfect for beginners ready to level up, this workshop walks you through machine fundamentals while introducing clean construction techniques you can reuse on future projects. You’ll leave with a finished bento bag and the confidence to keep sewing on your own.

In this class, you’ll learn:

  • Sewing machine setup and basic operation
  • Cutting, piecing, and simple shaping
  • Clean seams and finishing techniques
  • Tips for sizing and fabric choices

This is a newbie level course, meaning students should:

  • Be familiar with sewing machines and basic machine stitches
  • Have completed at least one finished garment or sewing project prior to this course

Special prizing for sewing workshop attendees: Anyone who purchases a ticket and attends a sewing workshop will be entered into a drawing to win one of two Bernette sewing machines! Winners will be announced at closing ceremonies, and must be in attendance to win.

Class Length: 2 hours
Class Cost: $40 + Eventbrite fees
Skill Level: Beginner

This workshop is open to participants 16 years of age or older. Participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian. A liability waiver will also need to be signed.

Membership Badge Required

A current Naka-Kon convention membership badge that is valid on the day of the event is required to attend. Need a badge?

Expectations and Etiquette

Students who attend the workshop agree to listen and follow all instructions from the instructor and Naka-Kon staff. Students will also agree to follow health and safety guidelines provided by the instructor and Naka-Kon staff. If a student damages the equipment, instruction space or other items utilized by Naka-Kon and the workshop, they may be held financially liable. Students may be removed from the workshop at the discretion of the instructor and Naka-Kon, and will not be given a refund. Students should engage and have fun, but should not cause distractions for the instructor or the rest of the class or disrupt learning.

You can exit the Overland Park Convention Center (OPCC) by the double doors at the front, near registration. From there it is a 5-10 minute walk, with a sidewalk that goes along the building. It will be dark, please be careful crossing the street between the two buildings.
